Protruding ears can lead to self-consciousness, social anxiety, low self-esteem and poor adaptation to school. The ears can be pinned, reshaped, reduced in size, and made more symmetrical. Adults and children can benefit from this surgery. The ear surgery can be performed at any age, as long as the ears have reached full size, which is usually at age 5 or 6. Having the procedure at a young age is highly desirable in two aspects: the cartilage is extremely pliable, thereby permitting greater ease of shaping, and secondly the child will experience psychological benefits from the cosmetic improvement. Adult patients should understand that the firmer cartilage of fully developed ears does not provide the same molding capacity as children.
