Spider Veins Procedure (Sclerotherapy)

Before

After

Many people have problems with spider veins involving the face and legs. We offer the latest in laser therapy combined with traditional injection sclerotherapy. Facial veins respond very well to laser
therapy, while spider veins involving the legs typically require a combination of injection therapy and laser therapy to obtain the most satisfying results. During your initial consultation Dr. Trimas will outline the best course of treatment tailored to your individual case.

Sclerotherapy is a very popular method of eliminating varicose veins and spider veins in which a solution, called a sclerosing agent, is injected into the veins. This causes an irritation to the inner lining of the vein resulting in closure of the vein. A small gauge needle is used to perform the injections and most patients relate the discomfort to an ant bite. The majority of persons who have Sclerotherapy performed have satisfying results. The number of treatments needed differs from patient to patient, depending on the extent of the problem.

What to expect after treatment

Bruising may occur especially after the first treatment, this is a normal process. You may experience slight discomfort such as aching or throbbing for the first day of two after your initial treatment. Walking will help to dissipate this sensation. If discomfort continues, Advil, Nuprin, or Ibuprofen may be taken with food. Also the vessels may appear to turn dark in color and/or be slightly tender. This could be an entrapment of blood in the closed vessels, a normal response to the procedure, and will be evacuated at the time of the next treatment session.

We recommend that you wear your support hose for several days taking them off at night. Exercise is an important part of the healing process. A 20 minute walk or bike ride once or twice a day is best for the healing process. If you are already involved in an exercise program, we encourage you to continue. The only exercises to avoid are leg exercises with weights and high impact aerobics. These activities should be avoided for seven (7) days.

You may apply cream or lotion to your legs the evening of your treatment. Shaving should be postponed until the following day. Hot tubs, saunas and long hot baths are not recommended for one (1) week following treatment. Sun exposure is NOT recommended for 10 days after your treatment. Sun burning areas that have recently been treated could result in skin damage.
